Dear Friends & Supporters,

It would be an understatement to say that 2020 was a challenging year. I have coined it “the year of drinking from a fire hose.” Yet, with all the uncertainty and reengineering, RMHCCF continued to deliver its mission—and for that, we are grateful to each of you who stepped forward and supported our organization.

As we navigated the pandemic, we communicated with our hospital partners and the CDC on an ongoing basis to ensure we were doing everything we could for the health and well-being of our families, their children, and our staff.

We adapted our policies, procedures, and protocol to meet the shifting landscape—yet families were (and still are) able to stay close to their hospitalized child. Yes, we did close the Houses for six weeks during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, we collaborated with our hotel partners to implement our hybrid plan for quarantining and building a cohort system of re-entry.

When we were forced to suspend our volunteer program on March 16th—which included our vibrant Share-A-Meal program, we had to reengineer how we provided meals to guest families while continuing to provide comfort and care in a safe environment. Thankfully, many of our restaurant partners, including our mission partner, McDonald’s, and many local restaurants all jumped in to assist our staff in feeding our families, despite facing their own challenges.

Although we did not serve the 2,600 families we would in a “normal” year, your support allowed us to care for almost 1,000 families last year. I can say with confidence, we cared for those families in need so they could stay near their hospitalized child.

As we look back at the year, there were many lessons learned. First and foremost, the importance of the health and well-being of loved ones—which truly emphasized the significance of the RMHCCF mission. When families turn to the Ronald McDonald House (pandemic or not) while their child is being diagnosed or undergoing hospital care, they are “drinking from a fire hose” and living with uncertainty, the unknown, and frankly—fear. RMHCCF continues to work with our pediatric hospitals to provide comfort, care, rest, and some normalcy to help relieve their stress.

The past year has also brought many gifts. We have seen the best of the best from our board, staff, friends, and supporters. Everyone stepped up to help meet the challenges to ensure our families received the best comfort and care.

This year, we are excited to celebrate the 25th anniversary of our RMHC chapter. The grand opening of the first Ronald McDonald House in Central Florida was on December 13, 1996. Your support throughout these last 25 years has made it possible for us to get through this pandemic and continue to deliver our mission to the most vulnerable families. Please tune in to our social media for stories of how we have grown and cared for almost 35,000 families.

Adkins Family

Rebecca Adkins is a single mother from Stark, FL. She cares for both her ailing grandmother and her son, Mateo, who was diagnosed with Biliary atresia and an autoimmune disorder. At just three years old, he has received three liver transplants. His first two transplants were in Miami, where they first learned about Ronald McDonald Houses. When Mateo was eligible to receive his third liver transplant, they came to Orlando and turned to our House on the campus of AdventHealth for Children. Luckily, his third transplant was a success, so Mateo and his mom have been staying with us since February of 2020 while he continues to receive care at the pediatric hospital.

When Brittney and Michael welcomed their son, Elijah into the world on June 29, 2020, he was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and was admitted into the NICU at Nemours Children’s Health. Being hours away from their home in Altha, FL, Brittney and Michael were unsure how they’d be able to afford a hotel to stay close to their son while he received care. They learned about the Ronald McDonald House and we were able to provide accommodations, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“We were introduced to the Ronald McDonald House at Nemours Children’s Health of Orlando when we learned that our baby would be born with a severe heart defect. We live several hours away and had no idea how we would afford lodging for the long NICU stay he would require. Thanks to the Ronald McDonald House, I am able to stay close to my baby boy throughout his journey to recovery. Everyone there has been so incredibly kind, helpful, and supportive of me. I cannot thank them enough for all they have done for us! They are an amazing charity.”

Jameeka Smith found out she was pregnant in June of 2019, and at just 19 weeks along, she almost lost her baby. Her cervix had completely dilated, so she was admitted to Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, where she stayed until she was 27 weeks into her pregnancy and she delivered her daughter, Aniyah. Aniyah was born prematurely and diagnosed with epilepsy, hydrocephalus, and other conditions that required extensive inpatient care. Jameeka checked in to our House on the campus of Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies in November of 2019 and stayed with us through September of 2020—through much of the pandemic!
